Getting Started with your Oculus Quest


The Oculus mobile app acts as a companion to your Oculus headset. With the mobile app you can:

  • Stay notified of sales and upcoming releases.
  • Buy, download, and remote-install VR apps.
  • Browse and manage your VR apps.
  • Customize your device settings.
  • Cast your VR experience to your phone or any Chromecast enabled device.
  • Set up your Quest or Go headset.
System Requirements

The minimum OS requirements for phones to run the Oculus app are:

  • Apple iOS 10+
  • Android 6.0+

With the Oculus app, you can set up your headset, browse VR games and apps and customize your device settings.

Download the App:



Additional Notes
  • Your phone must be connected to Wi-Fi and have Bluetooth turned on to use the mobile app to set up your Oculus Quest.
  • If you aren't prompted to download the mobile app initially, but run into any issues during the set up process while you're in-VR, you can use the app to complete your setup.
  • If you install the Oculus app on an unsupported device, you may experience issues setting up your Oculus Quest.

Before you set up your Oculus Quest headset, download the Oculus app on your mobile phone to get started.

To download the Oculus app:

  • Using the supported phone you'd like to download the Oculus app on, open your internet browser, go to oculus.com/app and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you're experiencing issues downloading the Oculus app, make sure you are using a supported phone, then try downloading the app from the Google Play Store or the App Store by searching for Oculus.

Your Oculus Quest needs to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to use and access most features and content. You will be prompted to choose your Wi-Fi network during the setup process.

To change the Wi-Fi network your Oculus Quest is connected to from your phone:

  1. Turn on your Oculus Quest and open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
  3. Tap the headset that you are currently using.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi.
  5. Tap the new Wi-Fi network you’d like to connect to and enter the password, if prompted.

To change the Wi-Fi network your Oculus Quest is connected to from your Oculus Quest Headset:

  1. Turn on your Oculus Quest and put on your headset.
  2. Select Settings from the bottom toolbar menu.
  3. Select Wi-Fi.
  4. Select the Wi-Fi network you'd like to connect to.
  5. If prompted, enter the password for the Wi-Fi network you'd like to connect to.
  6. Select Connect to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

Unboxing Your Headset

Before setting up your Oculus Quest headset, remove all items from the box to make sure that you aren't missing anything.

The following items should be included in your Oculus Quest box:

  • Oculus Quest headset
  • 2 Oculus Touch controllers
  • Power adapter
  • Charging cable
  • Glasses spacer
  • 2 AA batteries (for the controllers)
  • Reference guide
  • Safety & warranty manual

Connecting and Pairing Your Headset
Note: If you're prompted to download the Oculus app when you put on your headset, please refer to the directions for Connecting and Pairing Your Headset with the Oculus Mobile App in the section below.

When you're ready to start using your Oculus Quest headset for the first time:

  1. Plug the charging cord into your Oculus Quest Headset and a power source to begin charging it. The charging indicator turns green once it's fully charged.
  2. Once your headset has been charged, put on your headset and follow the in-VR instructions.
  3. For an optimal experience, wait until your Oculus Quest Headset is fully charged before using it.

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble completing the setup process, there's a few things you can check.

  • WiFi
    • Make sure your WiFi signal is strong. If you have a weak signal, try moving to another location.
    • Quest must be set up on a secure, password protected network. Unsecured networks can't be used for the setup process.
    • Your WiFi network can't use captive portals.
  • Oculus Service Status: Make sure that Oculus services are up and running as expected. You can do that by checking the service status page.
  • Login credentials: Double check to make sure that your username and password have been entered correctly. You can also try logging out, waiting a few minutes, and logging back in.

If you're still unable to complete the in-VR setup process, you can download the Oculus mobile app on a compatible smartphone and complete your setup from there.


Connecting and Pairing Your Headset with the Oculus Mobile App

When you're ready to start using your Oculus Quest headset for the first time:

  1. Plug the charging cord into your Oculus Quest Headset and a power source to begin charging it. The charging indicator turns green once it's fully charged.
  2. Download and open the Oculus app on your iPhone or Android phone.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your phone to your headset and your headset to your Wi-Fi network.
  4. Continue through the on-screen instructions to pair your Oculus Touch controllers with your headset.
  5. For an optimal experience, wait until your Oculus Quest Headset is fully charged before wearing it.

Wearing your Headset

To put on your headset:

  1. Loosen the side straps and then the top strap.
  2. Starting from the back, put on your headset.
    • Make sure to pull the back strap down until it cradles the base of your head.
    • If you’re wearing glasses, put on the headset from the front first.
  3. Tighten the side tabs and then top strap.
    • Make sure that the straps aren't too tight. The headset should fit comfortably and not apply too much pressure on your face and head.

To adjust your view:

  • With your hands holding both sides of your headset, slowly move your Oculus Quest up and down until the picture is clear and the headset feels comfortable.
  • If you wear glasses, insert the glasses spacer into your Oculus Quest headset prior to using it.
  • If the image in your headset isn't clear, you can use your left thumb to move the image slider on the left of the bottom of your headset to the left and right until the image is clear.

Setting up your Quest with Oculus Link

If you'd like to use Oculus Link to connect your Quest to a PC, please start by reviewing our Oculus Link compatibility article.

Begin by downloading and installing the Oculus PC software.

Confirm the following:

  • Your PC meets the recommended specs.
  • You're using a high-quality USB 3.0 cable capable of supporting data and power.
  • Your Oculus software is up to date on both your PC and your Quest.
    • To check the version number for the Oculus PC app:
      1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
      2. Click Settings at the left side of your screen.
      3. Click General from the settings options at the top of your screen.
      4. Scroll to the bottom of the section to see your OS version. To use Oculus Link, the number must be at least 1.43 or higher.
    • To check the version number for your Quest:
      1. Turn on your Quest.
      2. From the bottom tool bar, select Settings > See All.
      3. Select About from the left side of the settings panel. Next to Version, the number must be at least 11.00 or higher.

If you're unable to enable Oculus Link:

  • If you don't see Add Quest as the device on the PC software: log out of the PC software and log back in.
  • If you don't see the Enable Link pop-up on the PC software: log out of the PC software and log back in.
  • If you don't see the Enable Link option under Settings on Quest: completely power off the headset and restart.

Once you've confirmed these requirements, you can begin using your Quest with Link. To do so:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC.
  2. Turn on your Quest.
  3. Plug your USB 3 cable into a USB 3.0 port on your PC, and then plug the other end into your headset.
  4. A message displays in VR prompting you to Allow access to data. Select Deny.

    If you mistakenly 'Allow' the prompt, you must unplug your USB cable from the Quest and plug it back in.
  5. When prompted to Enable Oculus Link (beta), select Enable to begin remote rendering using Oculus Link.

Oculus Rift S

Getting Started with your Oculus Rift S


To set up your Oculus Rift S or Rift, you'll need to download the Oculus app on your PC. Before you install the Oculus app, check to make sure that your hard drive has sufficient disk space.

When you install the Oculus app on your computer, it'll install on the C: drive. If you want to install the app on a different system drive follow this support article for additional instruction.

To download and install the Oculus app on your computer:

  1. Go to www.oculus.com/setup and click Download Oculus Rift Software.
  2. Open the Oculus app and click Install Now.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to create an Oculus account and set up your Rift S or Rift.

Before you get started, make sure your Rift S and PC firmware and software are up to date.

Plug in your headset


Your Oculus Rift S uses USB 3.0 and DisplayPort connectors to connect to your computer. We've listed the different options that you can and can't use to connect your Rift S below:

Supported Connections
  • DisplayPort Connection: You can connect your Oculus Rift S to any DisplayPort port that is directly connected to a discrete GPU.
  • Mini DisplayPort Connection: You can connect your Oculus Rift S to any Mini DisplayPort port that is directly connected to a discrete GPU using the mDP → DP adapter included with your Rift S.
Unsupported Connections
  • Mini DisplayPort Connection with third party adapter: Currently, the only mDP → DP adapter certified to work is the one provided with your Rift S. If other adapters are used, we cannot guarantee functionality or performance.
  • HDMI Connection with third party adapter: Currently, there are no known adapters that will work from HDMI → DP. If this changes, we’ll update this article to include any supported adapters. Until then, we don't recommend trying to use Rift S with any PC or laptop that does not have a DisplayPort port or Mini DisplayPort port.
  • USB Type-C Connection with third party adapter: Currently, we cannot make any recommendations for USB-C → DP. If this changes, we’ll update this article to include any supported adapters.
  • In order to ensure basic functionality, any display port used to connect Rift S needs to be directly connected to a discrete GPU.

Set up your headset software


To set up your Oculus Rift S or Rift, you'll need to download the Oculus app on your PC. Before you install the Oculus app, check to make sure that your hard drive has sufficient disk space.

Fit and adjust your headset


Put on your headset and make sure it fits comfortably.

  1. Adjust the velcro top strap until the Rift S sits comfortably on your head.
  2. Rotate the fit wheel to adjust the tightness of the halo band.
  3. If you’re wearing glasses, put the headset on from the front first.
  4. Press the depth adjustment button on the bottom of the headset to adjust the lenses in or out for more clarity and a comfortable fit over glasses.

If you're setting up your Oculus Touch controllers for the first time, follow the on-screen instructions during the setup process.

To add your Touch controllers from your settings:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC computer.
  2. Select Devices in the left menu.
  3. Under Rift S and Touch click Pair Device and then select Pair Touch.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your Touch controllers.

Checking the Status of Your Devices

You can check the status of the Oculus Rift S or Rift devices you’ve connected in your settings.

To check the status of all the devices you’ve connected:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Devices in the left menu to check the status of your devices.
Reconnecting Your Devices

If you ever need to reconnect your devices, you can add them individually or run a full setup.

To reconnect your devices:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Devices in the left menu.
  3. If you see the device that you want to reconnect, click on it and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • If you don't see the device that you want to reconnect, click Add Headset.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your devices.
Checking Your Battery Levels

You can check the Battery Levels of Oculus Touch Controllers you’ve connected in your settings.

To check your battery levels:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Devices in the left menu and then look for the battery level below each Touch controller.
