I’m experiencing issues with my MSI laptop.

If you're experiencing a black screen or compatibility issue with your MSI laptop, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure that your graphics card drivers are up-to-date. Instructions for updating your graphics card drivers can be found here.
    • If the newest drivers don't solve the issue, please reach out to the MSI support team to update the VBIOS that enables HDCP on the DisplayPort.
  2. Disconnect and Reconnect your Rift S from your MSI laptop. To do this:
    • Unplug the USB cable from your MSI laptop.
    • Unplug the mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable from your MSI laptop.
    • First re-plug your USB cable into your MSI laptop.
    • Wait 5 seconds, or until the light on your headset comes on.
    • Re-plug your mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable into your MSI laptop.
  3. Restart your Oculus Service. To do this:
    • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
    • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
    • Click Restart Oculus.

I’m seeing static/snow in my Rift S headset.

If you’re seeing snow, static or a similar visual disturbance in your Rift S headset, try these troubleshooting tips:

  1. Disconnect and Reconnect your Rift S from your computer. To do this:
    • Unplug the USB cable from your computer.
    • Unplug the mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable from your computer.
    • First re-plug your USB cable into your computer.
    • Wait 5 seconds, or until the light on your headset comes on.
    • Re-plug your mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable into your computer.
  2. Unplug and Replug your Rift S headset. To do this:
    • Carefully remove the facial interface from your headset. This allows you to access the cable.
    • Unplug the cable from the headset.
    • Wait 5 seconds.
    • Insert the cable back into your headset.
    • Insert the facial interface back into your headset.
  3. Restart your Oculus Service. To do this:
    • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
    • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
    • Click Restart Oculus.

If these steps don't resolve this behavior, we ask for your patience as we work on firmware improvements that will be ready shortly after launch.

When I plug my Rift S into my computer, it loses positional tracking.

If you lose positional tracking on your Rift S when you plug it into a computer, try these troubleshooting tips:

  1. Restart your Oculus Service. To do this:
    • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
    • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
    • Click Restart Oculus.
  2. Unplug and Replug your Rift S headset. To do this:
    • Carefully remove the facial interface from your headset. This allows you to access the cable.
    • Unplug the cable from the headset.
    • Wait 5 seconds.
    • Insert the cable back into your headset.
    • Insert the facial interface back into your headset.
      Make sure that your laptop is plugged in
  3. If you're using your Rift S with a laptop, make sure that the laptop is plugged in. If your laptop's power adapter is not plugged in, the laptop may enter power saving mode which can negatively impact performance.

I sometimes see a black screen while I’m using my Rift S headset.

If you’re seeing a black screen sporadically while using your Rift S headset try these troubleshooting tips:

  1. Disconnect and Reconnect your Rift S from your computer. To do this:
    • Unplug the USB cable from your computer.
    • Unplug the mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable from your computer.
    • First re-plug your USB cable into your computer.
    • Wait 5 seconds, or until the light on your headset comes on.
    • Re-plug your mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable into your computer.
  2. Unplug and Replug your Rift S headset. To do this:
    • Carefully remove the facial interface from your headset. This allows you to access the cable.
    • Unplug the cable from the headset.
    • Wait 5 seconds.
    • Insert the cable back into your headset.
    • Insert the facial interface back into your headset.
  3. Restart your Oculus Service. To do this:
    • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
    • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
    • Click Restart Oculus.
  4. Opt into the Public Test Channel
    • Opt into the Public Test Channel from the Oculus app on your computer. To do this:
      • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
      • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
      • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
      • Click the toggle next to Public Test Channel.

My Rift S is losing track of my Touch controllers during use.

If you find that your Rift S is losing track of your Touch controllers periodically during use, try these troubleshooting tips:

  1. Remove and reseat the batteries in your touch controllers.
  2. Check the battery levels of each of your touch controllers. Replace the batteries if the levels are low.
  3. You can check your battery levels:
    • In Dash on the right side of the menu bar
    • Within the PC software under Devices
  4. Restart your Oculus Service. To do this:
    • Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    • Click Settings on the left side of the app.
    • Click Beta at the top of the settings options.
    • Click Restart Oculus.
      Make sure that your laptop is plugged in
  5. If you're using your Rift S with a laptop, make sure that the laptop is plugged in. If your laptop's power adapter is not plugged in, the laptop may enter power saving mode which can negatively impact performance.

I’m hearing a static sound while I’m setting up my Guardian for Rift S.

The static sound should stop after you finish setting up Guardian.

If the noise persists after you finish setting up Guardian, please contact Oculus Support directly.



My Touch controller(s) stopped working.

If your touch controllers stop working during regular use of your Rift S, try these troubleshooting tips:

  1. Remove and reseat the batteries in your touch controllers.
  2. Check the battery levels of each of your touch controllers. Replace the batteries if the levels are low.

    • In Dash on the right side of the menu bar
