Battery and Charging

Battery

There are a few best practices you can follow to maximize the battery life of your Oculus Quest 2 or Quest which are outlined below.

If you're looking for a way to extend the amount of play time you can get with your Quest 2, check out the Elite Strap With Battery accessory.

Power down when not in use

To maximize the life of your internal battery, we recommend that you fully power-down, or turn off, the device when it's not in use, rather than just putting it to sleep. This is especially important if you'll be traveling with your Quest 2 or Quest, or carrying it in a bag or a case.

To turn your headset off, hold the power until the indicator light on the front of the headset turns off, and the power down chime is played.

This will ensure that the device isn't accidentally turned on by either jostling the power button, or from the device falsely detecting that it's been placed on someone's head for use.

Unplug when fully charged

Leaving your Quest 2 or Quest on the charger after it has been fully charged can reduce the overall battery life over time. When your headset is finished charging, the indicator light on the side of the headset will go from red to green. When this happens, unplug your headset. If you aren’t planning to use your headset after charging, power it off after unplugging.

Use the provided charger

When charging your Quest 2 or Quest, use the charger that was included in the box. While you may be able to charge your headset’s battery with chargers from other devices, your headset and its included charger were designed and tested to work optimally together and to maximize the performance of your headset.

Please note, if you’re having trouble getting your Quest 2 or Quest charger to fit correctly in a wall outlet, you may need to adjust the position of the grounding pin.

Oculus Quest 2 and the Elite Strap With Battery both utilize “Optimized Battery Charging." Optimized Battery Charging takes multiple factors into account in order to provide the best overall charging and usage experience. This means that the battery may not charge to 100% at all times while in use.

When you’re not using your Oculus Quest 2 or Quest, it can either be put to sleep or turned off entirely.

Putting your headset to sleep

Putting your headset to sleep means that it will automatically “wake up” when it senses that the headset has been placed on someone’s head. When your headset is in sleep mode, power will still drain from the device, although much more slowly than when it’s in use.

You can put your headset to sleep by pressing the power button on your headset. You can wake it back up by placing the headset on your head.

Turning your headset off

Turning your headset off means that the system is completely off, and will only turn on when the power button is held. When your headset is turned off, much less power will be drained than if it were in sleep mode.

You can turn your Quest or Quest 2 off by holding down the power button for at least three seconds until the indicator light turns off.

Battery level monitoring

When you use the Elite Strap With Battery on your Quest 2, the main battery status indicators such as the LED on the side of your headset, and the main battery level shown in your headset, will show the combined battery level of your Quest 2 and Elite Strap With Battery. If you select the headset power icon in VR, it will show you a more detailed view of the battery status with separate charge levels for the internal headset battery and Elite Strap battery.

In addition to monitoring the color of the LED on your Quest 2, you can also see battery levels in-VR:

In your headset, on the universal toolbar, you'll see the combined level of your headset with your Elite Strap With Battery. You'll know that you're seeing the combined battery level when your headset icon is replaced by your headset with Elite Strap + Battery icon . You can also hover over the icon to see a breakdown of battery levels for your headset and Elite strap + Battery.

Yes. The examples below represent how the combined battery level of your headset and Elite Strap With Battery will behave in different situations.

  • If the internal battery for your Quest 2 is charged, but the Elite Strap battery is still charging, the status indicators will show that the devices are charging.

  • When the Elite Strap battery is plugged into your Quest 2, the LED on your headset will turn on for 5 seconds.

    • If both batteries are fully charged, the LED will turn green.

    • If the Elite Strap is providing a charge to the headset, the LED will turn orange.

After 5 seconds, the LED will shut off to preserve power unless the Elite Strap is plugged into the Quest 2 power adapter and is actively receiving current. In this case, the LED will stay lit.

  • Your Quest 2 will use up all of the charge in the Elite Strap With Battery before it starts to use up the internal battery.

  • If the combined battery level of your Quest 2 and Elite Strap battery drops below 10%, the LED on your Quest 2 will turn red to indicate the low battery levels. It will remain red until the combined battery level goes back above 10%, or the headset is turned off.
