Account

If you are new to Oculus, or using Oculus Quest 2, a Facebook account is required to use your device, apps and the Oculus store. You can create a Facebook account on your phone. To do this:

  1. Download the Oculus mobile app
  2. Once it downloads, open the app on your mobile device.
  3. Tap Sign Up

After you have created an account to use with your Oculus device, you can create a unique VR profile — so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

Password and PIN

If you are logged into Oculus with your Facebook account, you can change your password on Facebook.

If you are not logged into Oculus with your Facebook account, please follow the directions below.

To change your password using the Oculus app on your computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Under Account, click Password.
  4. Enter a new password and then enter your old password to confirm the change.
  5. Click Submit.

To change your password using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings and then tap Change Password.
  3. Enter your old password, your new password and your new password again to confirm.
  4. Tap Save to save your new password.

To change your password using the Oculus app for Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap More and then tap Change Password.
  3. Enter your old password, your new password and your new password again to confirm.
  4. Tap Save to save your new password.

The PIN that you create for your account is used to verify your identity and to streamline purchasing in the Oculus store. Because the PIN is associated with your account, all of your Oculus devices share the same PIN.

To reset your Oculus PIN using the Oculus PC app:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Under Account, click Oculus PIN.
  4. Enter a new PIN and then enter your password to confirm the change.
  5. Click Submit.


To reset your Oculus PIN using the Oculus mobile app:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
  3. Tap Reset Oculus Pin.
  4. Enter your password, then enter your new PIN and tap Submit.

To reset your Oculus PIN using the Oculus app for Samsung Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap More and then tap Reset Oculus PIN.
  3. Enter your password, then enter your new PIN and tap Save.

Many people use the same password on multiple websites. If one website is compromised, bad actors may try to use these passwords on other sites. As a result, we monitor online forums where lists of emails and passwords appear from time to time. If we believe that an email and password combination on one of these lists may match the one you use for your Oculus account, we will proactively invalidate your current password and ask you to choose a new, unique password to help protect your account. This process is designed as a preventative measure. It doesn’t necessarily mean that your account has been compromised.

To help avoid this issue in the future, here are a few tips on how to protect your passwords online:

  • Don’t use a password that you’ve used previously, and don’t use your Oculus password anywhere else.
  • Never share your password. You should be the only one who knows it.
  • Avoid including your name or common words. Your password should be difficult to guess.

We use a variety of practices, including a process called 'hashing,' that prevent us from having to store your plain text password.

Once we discover a set of disclosed email addresses and passwords, we check to see if any of them could be used to log into valid accounts.

If the email and hash combinations don’t match, we don’t take any action. If we find a match, we proactively prompt you to change your password. This process helps your account remain secure.

Payments

The payment method you add to your account is used to buy things in the Oculus store. All of your Oculus devices share the same payment method.

To add or remove a payment method using the Oculus app on your computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Select the Payment tab.
  4. Click the Add Payment Method dropdown menu.
  5. Select either Credit or Debit Card or PayPal Account.
  6. Enter your payment info to add your payment method. To remove a payment method, click Remove next to the applicable card or PayPal account.

To add a payment method using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
  3. Tap Payment Methods.
  4. Tap + Add Payment Method.
  5. Tap Add a credit or debit card or Add a PayPal account.
  6. Enter your payment info to add your payment method.

To remove a payment method using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
  3. Tap Payment Methods.
  4. Tap the payment method you want to remove and then tap Remove.

To add or remove a payment method using the Oculus app for Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

If you receive store credit from Oculus, you can check your store credit balance from your settings in the Oculus app. Before you use your store credit, you’ll need to add a payment method to your account. All your Oculus devices share the same store credit.

To check your store credit balance using the Oculus app on your computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Select the Payment tab to view your store credit balance.

To check your store credit balance using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
  3. Tap Payment Methods to view your store credit balance.

To check your store credit balance using the Oculus app for Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Payment Method to view your store credit balance.

Note: You can only use store credits in the currency they were issued in. Oculus Store Credit is non-transferable and cannot be used for other currency.

If you have store credit in a currency that is different from the currency of your Oculus store, the store credit cannot be applied to your purchases.

To make purchases on the Oculus Store through PayPal, you’ll first need to connect your PayPal account.

To connect your PayPal account to your account on Oculus:

  1. Open your Settings.
  2. Select Payment Methods.
  3. Select Add a PayPal account.
  4. Log in through PayPal and follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: you’ll be asked to complete your billing agreement with Facebook Technologies. Once your billing agreement is set up, you'll be able to make future payments using PayPal.

After you have successfully connected PayPal to your account on Oculus, you can update your preferred PayPal payment method. To change your preferred PayPal payment method to PayPal Credit or PayPal Balance:

  1. Visit PayPal.com and sign in to your personal PayPal account
  2. Click Wallet in the top menu
  3. Click your desired PayPal payment method in the left menu
  4. Under the section Preferred when paying online, select Set as preferred.

After these steps have been completed, your PayPal account should automatically save this payment method to use toward your future Oculus digital purchases.

  • These features and settings are strictly managed within your PayPal account. For any questions or concerns regarding PayPal Credit and PayPal Balance, we recommend contacting PayPal Support directly.
  • These features and settings may be subject to availability restrictions in certain regions.

Privacy and Security

When you create an account, you can choose who can see your real name, activity and friend list in the Oculus app.

From your privacy settings, you can control the following info:

  • Facebook Name: Choose who can see your real name and if you want people to find it in search.

  • Activity: Choose who can see your activity in games and apps.

  • Friend List: Choose who can see your friend list.

Oculus Rift S and Rift

To control who can see your info using the Oculus app on your PC computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.

  2. Select Settings in the left menu.

  3. Select the Privacy tab and then click Privacy Settings.


Oculus Quest and Oculus Go

To control who can see your info using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.

  3. Tap Privacy Settings.


Gear VR

To control who can see your info using the app on your Samsung Android phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap More.

  3. Tap Privacy Settings.

When you block someone in the Oculus app, they won’t be able to see your info or activity. Blocking a friend will also remove them from your friend list on all your Oculus devices.

Oculus Rift S and Rift

To block someone you’ve friended using the Oculus app on your PC computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.

  2. Select Friends from the bottom left menu.

  3. Click next to the name of the person you want to block, then click Block.

To unblock someone using the Oculus app on your computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.

  2. Select Settings in the left menu.

  3. Select the Privacy tab.

  4. Click Block List and then click Unblock next to the person you want to unblock.


Oculus Quest and Oculus Go

To block someone you’ve friended using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap Social from the bottom menu and then tap next to the person you want to block.

  3. Tap Block to block that person, then tap Block to confirm.

To unblock someone using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap Settings and then tap Privacy Settings.

  3. Tap List of users under Blocked Users.

  4. Tap the person you want to unblock and then confirm that you want to unblock that person.


Gear VR

To block someone you’ve friended using the Oculus app on your Samsung Android phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap Friends and then tap the person you want to block.

  3. Tap in the top right and then tap Block.

To unblock someone using the Oculus app on your Gear VR connected Phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.

  2. Tap More and then tap Privacy Settings.

  3. Tap List of users under Blocked Users, then tap the person you want to unblock and then tap Unblock.

Note: If you unblock a friend, you’ll need to add them again to see them on your friend list.

Two-factor authentication is an optional but recommended security feature for your account on Oculus which adds a secondary layer of protection. In addition to your password, two-factor requires an additional code from an app or SMS at login.

To enable two-factor authentication:

  1. Go to your Profile page.
    • If prompted, log into your account with your Oculus or Facebook credentials.
  2. Select Setup next to Two-Factor Authentication at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select the method of two-factor authentication you'd like to use and follow the onscreen instructions.

Notes:

  • To use an authentication app for two-factor authentication, you'll need an authenticator app like Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, or LastPass installed on your phone.
  • It is still recommended you enable two-factor authentication on Oculus if you already use two-factor authentication on Facebook and log into your Oculus device with your Facebook account.

Profile and Preferences

To change your profile picture using the Oculus app on your PC computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Click Friends in the bottom left menu.
  3. Click your name in the right slide-out menu.
  4. Click your current profile picture at the top of the app to change it.
  5. Choose an Oculus picture or click Upload Picture at the bottom to add your own.
  6. Click Confirm.

To change your profile picture using the Oculus app for Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top left
  3. Tap your profile picture and then tap one of the following to change your profile picture:
    • Take Photo
    • Choose from Phone
    • Choose an Oculus Picture

Note: Your profile picture must have a resolution of 176x176 pixels.

When you make a VR profile on your Oculus device, you'll create a username that's publicly visible and shared on all your Oculus devices. You can change your username only once every 6 months.

Username requirements:

  • Usernames must start with a letter or number.

  • Usernames may be between 2 to 20 characters in length.

  • Usernames may include a mix of letters, number, dashes and underscores, but may not include dashes or underscores consecutively.

  • Usernames may not have spaces, slashes or periods.

To change your username:

  1. Go to secure.oculus.com and log into your account.

  2. Click Profile on the left.

  3. Click Edit next to Username.

  4. Enter your new username and your password.

  5. Click SAVE and then click CONFIRM.

You can create an avatar for your account on Oculus that you can see in some Oculus Store content. All your Oculus devices share the same avatar.

To create an avatar using your Oculus Rift or Rift S:

  1. Put on your Rift or Rift S headset and go to Oculus Home.
  2. Next to your profile picture in the top right, select Edit Avatar.
  3. Select Start in the center of the mirror.
  4. Select Head, Wardrobe or Palette on the left to customize your avatar.
  5. When you’re done, select Exit on the right.

To create an avatar using your Oculus Quest 2, Quest, Go or Samsung Gear VR:

  1. Put on your Oculus Quest 2, Quest, Go or Gear VR headset.
  2. Select People from the navigation menu, then select Profile.
  3. Select Edit Avatar to open the avatar editor.
  4. Select Face, Hair, Facial Hair, Eyewear or Clothing in the left menu to customize your avatar.
  5. When you’re done, select Save Avatar & Exit on the bottom.

Oculus Quest 2, Quest and Go

To change the language for the Oculus app on your phone:

The language you see in the Oculus app will be based off the language you select in your phone settings. If the language you select from your phone settings isn’t supported in the Oculus app, the language in the Oculus app will default to an Oculus-supported language in your location. If there isn’t an Oculus-supported language available in your location, it’ll default to English.

The Oculus app supports the following languages:

  4. Next to Language Preference, click to select your language.


Gear VR

To change the language for the Oculus app on your Samsung Android Phone:

The language you see in the Oculus app will be based off the language you select in your Android phone settings. If the language you select from your phone settings isn’t supported in the Oculus app, the language in the Oculus app will default to an Oculus-supported language in your locale. If there isn’t an Oculus-supported language available in your locale, it’ll default to English.

The Oculus app for Android supports the following languages:

Friends

You can add friends to your account on Oculus to invite to games and parties. All of your Oculus devices share the same friend list.

To add friends to your account from your computer:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
  2. Select Friends from the bottom-left menu.
  3. Click Add Friends.
  4. Search by username or first and last name.

To add friends to your account from your Oculus Quest or Go Headset:

  1. To bring up your bottom toolbar, press the Oculus button.
  2. Tap from the bottom menu and then tap Add Friend
  3. Search by username or first and last name to add them.

To add friends to your account from your Oculus Rift S or Rift Headset:

  1. To open Dash, press the Oculus button.
  2. Select the Social menu from Dash and choose Friends.
  3. Select the Add Friend icon at the top of the Friends panel.
  4. Search by username or first and last name.

To add friends to your account using the Oculus app on your phone:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap from the bottom menu and then tap
  3. Search by username or first and last name to add them.

To add friends to your account using the Oculus app for Gear VR:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your phone.
  2. Tap Friends from the bottom menu and then tap Add Friends.
  3. Search by username or first and last name to add them.

Note: Some people choose not to have their first and last name visible in search.

There’s nothing special you need to do with your Facebook account to prevent you running into problems with it -- you don’t need to add a certain number of friends, post on Facebook, or log into the Facebook app or website regularly (you are logging into Oculus with Facebook). Please ensure you follow Facebook's Community Standards and Conduct in VR policy. It’s also a good idea to follow our tips on account security, including turning on two-factor authentication as an additional layer of protection.

There is no need to use Facebook for anything other than logging into Oculus if you don’t want to. And although you’ll have a Facebook profile, you can also create a unique VR profile - so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR. And if you don’t want people on Oculus to find you by your Facebook name, they won’t — just make your Facebook name visible to ‘Only Me’ in your Oculus settings. Even if you don’t use Facebook regularly, we believe that social VR has so much more to offer, and over time we plan to bring new Facebook-powered experiences to Oculus, like Messenger and Horizon. Using a VR profile that is backed by a Facebook account and authentic identity also helps us protect our community and makes it possible to offer additional integrity tools. And as Facebook adds new privacy and safety tools, Oculus can adopt and benefit from them too.

If you encounter problems with your Facebook account, we want to try to help you resolve them as quickly as possible.

  • If you have a temporary issue with your Facebook account after logging in to your Oculus device — for example if it uses a name that does not follow our policies — you'll still be able to use your device while you resolve the issue, so long as you remain logged in to your device and do not log out. If you're in this situation, you'll have the opportunity to fix or request a review of the issue when you log into Facebook.

  • Repeated or particularly serious violations of our Community Standards may lead you to lose access to your Facebook account, meaning you won't be able to log into your device using that account.

No. If you log into your Oculus device with your Facebook account, you can choose what information about your VR activity you post to your Facebook profile or timeline, either by giving permission to post or by updating your settings. If you are an existing user and you choose not to merge your Oculus account and Facebook account, you will not have access to Facebook-powered social features and you will not be able to post your VR activity to your Facebook profile or timeline.

Unable to setup the Oculus PC Software

Please follow these steps if you're unable to complete the setup of the Oculus PC software:

  1. Download the Oculus Companion App.
  2. Allow the app to install on your compatible smart device.
  3. Log into your device using your Oculus or your Facebook account.
  4. Once the setup completes on your smart device, launch the Oculus PC software.
  5. Complete the setup on the Oculus PC software.

Public Test Channel

Before we make our software available to everyone, we put it through a variety of tests in an effort to ensure there are no major issues. The Oculus Public Test Channel Program is an opportunity for our community to test pre-release builds of the Oculus software, and join in to help with the process. Together we can work to build better features and updates, and we look forward to hearing your suggestions, issues you report, and feedback on new features and changes.

You can choose to join the Public Test Channel anytime, and by enrolling, you’ll be given the option to report any issues you encounter while testing potential changes. You can also choose to leave the program anytime after you’ve enrolled. Keep in mind enrolling in the Public Test Channel means you’ll be testing a beta version of the Oculus software that isn’t a finished product, so you may encounter issues ranging from minor issues to app crashes. If you run into any issues that cause discomfort or safety features to stop working (example: Guardian), we recommend you stop using your Rift S or Rift or use it with caution.

Enrolling in the Public Test Channel

You’ll automatically get the pre-release version of the Oculus software when one is available. Otherwise, you’ll get the public version.

To enroll in the Oculus Rift S and Rift Public Test Channel:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC computer.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Select the Beta tab.
  4. Next to Public Test Channel, click to enroll.

Once you’ve enrolled in the Public Test Channel, you can choose to leave at any time by returning to the Beta section of the Oculus app and clicking next to Public Test Channel.
